Cleaning Your Earbuds: Why, When, and How

October 16, 2019 2 min read

Though we’d rather not admit it, we all have earwax. It’s a natural part of life. Every ear comes with earwax. But sometimes, that natural thing can be, well, gross. And when it comes to earbuds, the last thing you want is a gross earbud tip in your ear as you listen to Lady Gaga’s newest hit.

Why Do I Need to Clean My Earbuds?

That earwax can do more than just gross you out. It can be sticky, attracting and sticking to fluff from your clothing or your own hair. When you put that same earbud into your ear, it can feel uncomfortable and gross, which really takes away from the listening experience.

The debris on your earbud tip can also collect at the speaker and dull the clarity of sound, not to mention lessen the volume. So, it’s a good idea to clean out those tips and the area of the speaker, too.

When Should I Clean My Earbuds?

Ideally, you would clean your earbuds once a week, but not everyone can remember to do that. So, a good rule is anytime you see your earbuds starting to collect earwax or dirt, you should make an effort to clean them.

How Do I Clean My Earbuds?

The process of cleaning earbuds is simple!

First, make sure your earbuds are off and disconnected from your device. Then, get a clean cloth and dip it in soapy water. Wring out the cloth until it is only slightly damp. Then, gently wipe away any dirt or earwax on the outside of the earbud tip.

It’s important to note that you should never use rubbing alcohol to clean your earbuds, as it can discolor and even damage them.

The next part of the cleaning process could go two ways. You could purchase a cleaning tool and use that, or you could stick with your trusty cloth!

For the cleaning tool, you’ll want to pull the tips off of the earbuds. Then, you can use the tool’s metal loop side to gently scoop out any earwax or dirt. Be gentle and careful. Finally, wipe the tips with a soapy wet cloth and dry thoroughly before reattaching to the earbuds.

For the cloth, complete the same steps, except you need to substitute the tool for your cloth and gently wipe away the dirt and earwax.

Now that you know the why, when, and how of cleaning your earbuds, you’ll be a pro at making sure your listening experience is earwax-free!
